PILLARS
:
Pillar, tree and mountain are symbols connected with world picture
which depicts the world in three great storeys Heaven, Earth and
the Underworld. Pillars as architectural elements with capitals
were lavishly and intricately carved. It seems that craftsman wanted
to turn wood back into the tree. Pillars were carved with tree,
mountain, vase, foliage scroll and geometric patterns. Motifs having
connections in prehistoric times to Harrapa and Moenjo Daro 2500
BC, Bactrian Greeks 3rd millinium BC, Gupta Empire 320-535 BC to,
Islamic traditions in ornament 4th to 9th centuries AD are evident
in carvings.
